Matt Smith is a grab bag of larks, crotchets, wild hairs, and hobbyhorses that manage to pass — most of the time — for a functioning human being.  A writer, naturalist, designer, musician, mapmaker, and programmer (and father), he takes pride in following the great multi-purpose tradition of his adoptive Mississippi, where a “J.B.’s Bait Shop, Bar-B-Q, Beauty Parlor, & Tire Repair” or some such establishment can be found at every backroad junction.  Matt likes things that are beautifully ugly, exotically ordinary, and intricately simple:  ants, nursery rhymes, vacant lots, Delta blues, names, baseball, thunderstorms, and dirt, to list a few examples.  He recently finished a master’s degree in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and lives in Jackson, Mississippi.
